ICESC Teaching Literacy

ICESC's objective of improving literacy and math outcomes includes both establishing direct academic support and sustainable structures. A recent example is the Saturday Academy (April–June 2025) serving 75 students with targeted literacy and math tutoring each month. The Academy’s intergenerational model engaged community mentors and Divine Nine volunteers, while concurrent parent workshops drew 20 parents per session. Students gained academic support along with STEAM, SEL, and career exploration activities. Partner schools reported improvement in spring 2025 state testing, including Tindley Summit (ELA +5.8%, Math +2.3%), Tindley Genesis (Math +2.2%), and Indy STEAM Academy (ELA +10%, Math +7.5%). Projects and collaborations include:

Touching the Spirit

Her many years as a successful classroom teacher, literacy professional development specialist, and manager of district and university-based staff development centers has inspired her work and led to the design of her Touching the Spirit intensified accelerated teaching strategies. Its effectiveness rests on five African American teaching and learning patterns used within the context of nine supportive practices.
